Greg Escalante, noted gallerist, Lowbrow champion and a founder of Juxtapoz magazine, dies at 62

Greg Escalante, a bond trader who went on to become a key patron of the Lowbrow art movement as a collector, gallerist and co-founder of the magazine Juxtapoz, died Thursday evening of undisclosed causes at his home in Huntington Beach. He was 62. His death was confirmed by Wendy Sherman, manager of his Chinatown namesake art space, Gregorio Escalante Gallery. “We’re still dealing with the news,” Sherman said Friday afternoon. “He was a huge champion of artists, especially Lowbrow artists. He supported a lot of artists.” An image posted to the gallery’s Instagram feed Friday featured a photo of Escalante clad in a blue suit. A written tribute, echoing the words of Walt Whitman, reads: “ ‘O Captain! My Captain!’ We are devastated today by the loss of our Captain Escalante. He was the visionary with the kindest soul.”

Escalante is one of the key figures associated with Lowbrow, a pop-inflected school of art that emerged in 1970s California, and which drew inspiration from underground comics, punk music, tattooing, the custom car scene, and surf and skate culture — the exact opposite of what the minimalist-minded mainstream art world was into during that era. “He championed Lowbrow art when it was a very nascent movement,” said Mat Gleason, owner of the Chinatown art space Coagula Curatorial, and a longtime friend of Escalante’s. “He became a real patron of the field.” “If Lowbrow had a Mt. Rushmore, he’d have to be on it.” For much of his professional career, Escalante worked in bond trading at a firm in Orange County. He first established a name for himself in the art world as a patron — over the years serving on boards for the Laguna Art Museum, the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana and the Huntington Beach Art Center. He also emerged as an important collector of Lowbrow work, art that generally thumbed its nose at the abstract-minded academic world — or, for that matter, any sort of pretension. One of Escalante’s early acquisitions was a work by Los Angeles painter Robert Williams (now regarded as an elder statesman of the movement) that had been featured on the cover of the skate magazine Thrasher. The image showed a sweet-looking boy and girl — the boy holding a dead rat by the tail. Seeing Williams’ work changed his life, Escalante told The Times in 1992: “I just went, ‘Wow, wow, wow. … This is exactly what somebody should be doing; this is making art exciting again.’ ” Art, he said, “had gotten too intellectual.”

“If lowbrow had a Mt. Rushmore, he’d have to be on it.”

He and Williams became fast friends and associates. In 1994, the two co-founded Juxtapoz, along with numerous other figures associated with Thrasher. The first issue debuted in the winter of that year and featured a painting by Williams of a machine-like man skinning planet Earth. The editor’s letter, written by Williams, also featured a volley against the confines of high-brow taste: “Here is the first issue of Juxtapoz, the art magazine that plans to stay below everyone’s dignity.” Beyond Juxtapoz, Escalante helped support important Lowbrow exhibitions, such as “Kustom Kulture” at the Laguna Art Museum in 1993, and the follow-up “Kustom Kulture II” at the Huntington Beach Art Center 20 years later. By 2001, he had established his first gallery, Copro Nason, in Santa Monica, with fellow dealer Douglas Nason. (“Joe Copro” is a nickname Escalante often used.) The gallery now is run by Gary Pressman, and Nason no longer is involved. In the fall of 2015, Escalante went on to establish Gregorio Escalante Gallery in Chinatown as a place to showcase artists he admired. Works have included those by Jeff Gillette, who turned the gallery into a mock landfill, paintings by animator Jorge R. Gutierrez of “Book of Life” fame, and a group show that gathered art inspired by the Black Panthers. “Greg’s favorite thing was to feature unknown artists,” said Sherman, “an artist who was amazing but no one has ever heard of.” Escalante was born in 1955 in Los Angeles. His father owned a sign business, and his mother was a homemaker. He attended Los Alamitos High School. He was a devoted surfer — often on the water for hours before the start of school each day. He had an early interest in art, receiving a bachelor’s degree in art from Cal State Long Beach, where he specialized in ceramics. Escalante began bond trading after an uninspiring job at a ceramics factory left him disillusioned, but his interest in art never waned. “He was a fan,” said Gleason, whose gallery is adjacent to Escalante’s. “He was an appreciator.” The lanky gallerist, who often studded his speech with surf jargon (“totally,” “gnarly”), also was known as a fan of flamboyant duds. Escalante would hit openings decked out in checked-green jackets, powder-blue suits and a shirt covered in celebrity mugshots. Sherman recalled Escalante arriving at one opening in a white suit — then having all the artists in the room sign it with markers. “He was definitely the best-dressed art person, for sure,” she said. Friends and colleagues remember Escalante’s unfailing generosity most of all. “He was the kind of guy who, no matter who came to his gallery, he’d bring them by to see my shows,” Gleason said. “It could be some celebrity. “With gallerists, there is a collegiality, but they can be competitive. But that stuff was secondary to him. He was really about living in the moment of being around artists and celebrating them.” Escalante is survived by his daughter, Isabella Escalante. PUNK ROCK IS YOUR FRIEND # 3: DANGER FRIENDS

Hey all! Welcome to the third installment of PUNK ROCK IS YOUR FRIEND and today we chat with DANGER FRIENDS, Kung Fu Records latest addition to the label! DANGER FRIENDS is a second-wave synth-punk band from Simi Valley, CA, the suburban home of the infamous Rocketdyne nuclear disaster. The band formed in 2009 from the remains of various punk and synth-pop bands; taking influences from groups like DEVO, Murder City Devils, The Cure, and The Screamers to craft their own raw, synthesizer and bass driven punk rock, without the aid of guitar! Punknews.org describes them as, “… the perfect kind of punk band in that they give two shits about what punk is “supposed” to be or what it has become….The Screamers, Gary Numan, and The Normal would all be proud. Highly recommended.”

We sat down with them as they prepare for the upcoming 20th Annual Christmas Formal with THE VANDALS and TSUNAMI BOMB at the Anaheim House of Blues on Saturday, December 19th! Here is what they had to say:

Starting with the classic questions, how was the band started?

Brian and Jay kept up talking about making a band even though Jay had moved up to San Francisco. Jay eventually got too cold and moved back home and we started jamming and writing. We then convinced James to come to one practice and he was super skeptical that wouldn’t be punk enough for him (go figure, the guy who brings keys to punk band was the skeptic). Turns out, Brian yelled enough for James and he was in. The only problem was we couldn’t convince a guitar player (numerous try-outs) to stick around.

Has the lack of guitars been limiting or liberating?

It wasn’t for lack of trying. Originally, we figured guitar was the way to go. After a while we realized we really didn’t want or need a guitar because James and Jay were able to fill the gap in a way that we preferred. Also, imagine a band without the ego of a lead guitarist, and all you have to deal with is the super ego of a vocalist and keyboardist who thinks he knows things, but doesn’t. We think its both limiting and liberating. Jay gets to pretend he is playing guitar when he really isn’t able to handle that many strings.

Where did the band name come from?

We took it from our friend Billy’s Xbox Live name. There was a moment where we toyed with being Danger Friends USA ( 5 years), but after numerous friend requests from foreigners looking for American friends, we decided it was time to drop the USA. Ironically, there has been a drop of friend requests on face book.

DangerFriendsPhoto_Color

What music do you draw from that has influenced the band?

Screamers, Murder City Devils, Devo, The Cure, Gary Numan, the Buzzcocks. They are all great!

Do you consider Danger Friends to be punk rock? What is punk rock to you?

Ya, we think so. There is always something inherently lame about saying, ‘ ya, im punk,’ but….. ya know? We all come from a pretty solid punk background and we figured that just showed through the music (there is a whole lot of nasally screaming going on if you didn’t notice). Punk to us? Harder music without the limitation of having to be good at what you’re doing. Also, it turns out we did something kinda different? I don’t know, what’s it to you (this is us being angry and defensive punks)?

What three adjectives describe your music and band?

aggressively self-defeating optimists

How did you come to be on Kung Fu Records?

Well this is the thing. We had been a band for five years and we were going to put a record out on our own but Jay had too much to drink and thought it would be a good idea to ask Kung Fu if they would do it. As an aside, the great part of this was one of Jay’s punk idols were the Vandals (the band that got Jay into punk and Brian’s second concert) so in drunk desperation Jay emailed his hero and got an EP for us. So kids, follow your dreams.

Any other Kung Fu Records releases you like? Any you would recommend to people? Any bands you would like to play or tour with (past or present)?

Ozma was a keyboard band before keyboard bands were cool. We are huge fans of Tsunami Bombs and Hitler bad, Vandals good is a classic record but you don’t need us telling you that. Murder City Devils would be great! Vandals and Tsunami Bomb (two down, one to go!)

How would you describe your live show?

Its generally a wall of noise, abrasive and barely controlled chaos.

Any great tour stories?

We once played too loud at a venue in North Hollywood and the sound guy had a meter that he kept pointing at during the show to tell us to be more quiet. The thing is we saw him alter the meters readings to make it even more quiet than he originally said we needed to be because he didn’t like our music. He ended up cutting vocals and kicking us off stage. It was pretty rad.

We recently played Punk Rock Bowling and were opening for the Weirdos, Dickies, and the Rezillos (pretty great lineup, right?) We were the opener and we were incredibly excited to play this gig. The one thing that we could not and would not do was to mess this up. First song, Marc’s kick pedal chain snaps. The replacement comes slowly and us goons are trying not to have the crowd turn on this ‘daydream Jonny’ opening band. The replacement kick in, we start song two…. and the replacement kick breaks too (we were told not to bring ours and were dumb enough to listen). Finally, after another 5 minute lull, we fixed it and finished the set to the best of our ability. Suffice it to say, people left that show saying Danger Friends were AWESOME!

How did the music video for “Zeros” come about?

Brian had a cool idea, we didn’t have any money, but we did have a garage and plentiful amount of confetti and legs and arms. So… With that, we pretty much did the only video that we could do. Then we edited it ourselves and released it!

If someone was reading has never heard the band, what song would you recommend they start with?

Jay, James, and Brian also assumed it was Zeros but now we aren’t so sure. We just switched drummers and picked up our old friend Jim (Dead Yeller, Henchmen 21, Punk Is Dead). Before this, Jim is our self proclaimed ‘number one fan’ and he claims that you should listen to I Feel Sorry. So, there you go!

Are you excited about the upcoming Christmas Formal? What should people expect from you guys?

Yes, absolutely excited about this!!!!!! We are currently participating in a ‘festive think tank’ to decide on how to best represent the holiday season with our performance. It’ll probably be weird… and …. well, probably just weird.

What’s the plans for the future? What’s next for Danger Friends?

We need shows, We want shows, We will play shows, and we’re working on new material!

Anything you would like to add?

Come to the show on December 19th! We promise to do our best!!! We hope not to have technical difficulties!!

TSUNAMI BOMB TO REUNITE ORIGINAL LINE-UP WITH NEW VOCALIST

From the band’s FACEBOOK PAGE:
So, to finally come clean and explain…

Besides being proud to present Trust No One – the rarities collection – something else pretty great has come out of the time the band spent assembling it: we’ve gotten to see each other again after all these years. We hung out looking at old photos, remembering the songs, and having a great time together. We just realized how much we really missed each other, missed our songs, and missed our band too. We had so much fun putting together this compilation that we thought maybe we should take the logical next step and perform some shows in support of the release.

We had hoped that our singer, Emily Whitehurst (aka “Agent M”), would join us as well. While she is behind the release of this collection and understands our desire to reunite the band with the other original members, she must follow her heart, and continue to devote herself to her current project, Survival Guide, which we support wholeheartedly.

After much discussion with many of the various past Tsunami Bomb members, we have finally decided that, with the help of a special guest co-vocalist, Tsunami Bomb will once again perform live with the rest of the original line-up. As it was originally, Oobliette will return as co-lead vocalist/keyboardist, Brian Plink will return to guitar/vocals, Dominic Davi will return on bass/vocals, and Gabe Lindeman will be back on drums.

We understand that some people might have a hard time accepting a Tsunami Bomb reunion without M – and we completely respect that. But if you want to hear some of the classic Tsunami Bomb songs, played by the original members who wrote most of them, we hope that you will show up to see four old friends – with the help of a new one! – try to do those old songs justice.

We are incredibly excited to have an opportunity to be Tsunami Bomb once again, and don’t yet know what the future may bring. We promise to take this seriously and bring back a band that people who have loved Tsunami Bomb since the early days can truly be excited about, as well one that honors the work of the many amazing musicians who have been a part of Tsunami Bomb since it first began. And don’t forget! If you’re missing Emily, you can pick up Survival Guide’s excellent new album “Way To Go” that is out now. We love it and think you will too.

See you soon!
Tsunami Bomb

Kung Fu Records and Tsunami Bomb have recently announced the upcoming release of “Trust No One” a new LP collection of early years material by the band for early 2016.
The band previously released “The Ultimate Escape” LP in 2002 and “The Definitive Act” LP in 2004.
